Clarity Isn't the Problem. Obedience Is.

Most of us don't struggle with knowing what God wants. We struggle with doing it.

When Deborah calls for Barak, she doesn't give him a riddle or a vague feeling. She gives him a direct word:

"Has not the LORD God of Israel commanded, 'Go and deploy troops at Mount Tabor; take with you ten thousand men of the sons of Naphtali and of the sons of Zebulun'?" (Judges 4:6)

God tells Barak where to go, who to take, and how many. And He gives a promise: "I will deliver him into your hand." Barak has clarity. What he doesn't have is courage.

Sisera had nine hundred chariots of iron. I get why Barak hesitated. But clarity with cowardice turns into delayed obedience. We go into interview mode with God. What about this? What about that? Who's going to be there? What if it doesn't work? We'll call it wisdom or call it prayer, but sometimes we're just stalling.

Obedience with fine print

Then Barak puts conditions on it:

And Barak said to her, "If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go!" (Judges 4:8)

That's obedience with fine print. That's an asterisk. "Yes, Lord, if."

Missouri is called the Show-Me State. A lot of us live there spiritually. God, show me first, and then I'll go. There's a difference between belief and trust. Where the rubber meets the road, where the chisel meets the stone, is between believing God can do something and trusting Him to do it. Barak believed God was real. Barak believed God could do it. He just didn't trust God enough to go without a safety net.

Christian atheism isn't saying "there is no God." It's saying "there is a God, but I need something more than His word before I move." It's living like God's promise isn't quite enough.

Deborah goes with him. But she tells him the glory won't be his. The honor of that victory goes to a woman, Jael. Barak still got to be part of what God was doing, but he gave up something because he wouldn't go on God's word alone.

Where are you hesitating?

So here's the question I want you to sit with: what has God already made clear to you that you're still negotiating?

You don't need another sign. You probably don't need another sermon. You may not even need another meeting. You know the phone call you need to make. You know the text you need to send. You know the sin you need to confess and the person you need to forgive.

Here's the line I want you to remember: to delay is to disobey. Delayed obedience is still disobedience. I believe in God; I just don't trust God. That little narrow window is where Christian atheism sneaks in. I'll sing that He's a good God, and then go home and live like He's not. Has God spoken? Then go.
